For we saw his star when it rose\u00a0and have come to\u00a0worship him.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-23173\" class=\"text Matt-2-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him;<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-23174\" class=\"text Matt-2-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where\u00a0the Christ was to be born.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-23175\" class=\"text Matt-2-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>They told him, \u201cIn Bethlehem of Judea, for so it is written by the prophet:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"poetry top-1\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span id=\"en-ESV-23176\" class=\"text Matt-2-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>\u201c\u2018And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Matt-2-6\">are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Matt-2-6\">for from you shall come a ruler<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Matt-2-6\">who will\u00a0shepherd my people Israel.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"top-1\"><span id=\"en-ESV-23177\" class=\"text Matt-2-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star had appeared.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-23178\" class=\"text Matt-2-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>And he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, \u201cGo and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-23179\" class=\"text Matt-2-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>After listening to the king, they went on their way. And behold, the star that they had seen when it rose went before them until it came to rest over the place where the child was.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-23180\" class=\"text Matt-2-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-23181\" class=\"text Matt-2-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>And going into the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshiped him. Then, opening their treasures,\u00a0they offered him gifts,\u00a0gold and\u00a0frankincense and\u00a0myrrh.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-23182\" class=\"text Matt-2-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>And\u00a0being warned\u00a0in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Matt-2-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>Now when they had departed, behold,\u00a0an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, \u201cRise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-23184\" class=\"text Matt-2-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-23185\" class=\"text Matt-2-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>and remained there until the death of Herod.\u00a0This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet,\u00a0\u201cOut of Egypt I called my son.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Matt-2-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, became furious, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time that he had ascertained from the wise men.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-23187\" class=\"text Matt-2-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"poetry top-1\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span id=\"en-ESV-23188\" class=\"text Matt-2-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cA voice was heard in Ramah,<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Matt-2-18\">weeping and loud lamentation,<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Matt-2-18\">Rachel weeping for her children;<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Matt-2-18\">she refused to be comforted, because they\u00a0are no more.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"text Matt-2-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt,<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-23190\" class=\"text Matt-2-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>saying, \u201cRise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for\u00a0those who sought the child&#8217;s life are dead.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-23191\" class=\"text Matt-2-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-23192\" class=\"text Matt-2-22\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and\u00a0being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-23193\" class=\"text Matt-2-23\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>And he went and lived in a city called\u00a0Nazareth,\u00a0so that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, that he would be called a Nazarene.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>2023 Church Theme: Advancing God\u2019s Kingdom in the New Normalcy Scripture: Matthew\u00a02 (ESV) Speaker: Pastor Aaron Garcia Matthew\u00a02 (ESV) 1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men\u00a0from\u00a0the east came to Jerusalem,\u00a02\u00a0saying, \u201cWhere is he who has been born king of the Jews?
