son of David, the son of Abraham:\u00a0<\/span><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">Abraham was the father of Isaac, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">Isaac the father of Jacob, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">Jacob the father of Judah and his brothers, <\/span><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">Judah the father of Perez and Zerah, whose mother was Tamar, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">Perez the father of Hezron, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">Hezron the father of Ram, <\/span><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">Ram the father of Amminadab, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">Amminadab the father of Nahshon, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">Nahshon the father of Salmon, <\/span><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, <\/span><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">Obed the father of Jesse, <\/span><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: revert;\">and Jesse the father of King David.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"list left-1 top-05 child-vertical-none\">\n<p class=\"hang-2\"><span class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>Solomon the father of Rehoboam,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Matt-1-7\">Rehoboam the father of Abijah,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Matt-1-7\">Abijah the father of Asa,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-23153\" class=\"text Matt-1-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>Asa the father of Jehoshaphat,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Matt-1-8\">Jehoshaphat the father of Jehoram,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Matt-1-8\">Jehoram the father of Uzziah,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-23154\" class=\"text Matt-1-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>Uzziah the father of Jotham,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Matt-1-9\">Jotham the father of Ahaz,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Matt-1-9\">Ahaz the father of Hezekiah,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-23155\" class=\"text Matt-1-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>Hezekiah the father of Manasseh,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Matt-1-10\">Manasseh the father of Amon,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Matt-1-10\">Amon the father of Josiah,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-23156\" class=\"text Matt-1-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>and Josiah the father of Jeconiah\u00a0and his brothers at the time of the exile to Babylon.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"list left-1 top-05 child-vertical-none\">\n<p class=\"hang-2\"><span id=\"en-NIV-23157\" class=\"text Matt-1-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>After the exile to Babylon:\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Matt-1-12\">Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Matt-1-12\">Shealtiel the father of Zerubbabel,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-23158\" class=\"text Matt-1-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>Zerubbabel the father of Abihud,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Matt-1-13\">Abihud the father of Eliakim,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Matt-1-13\">Eliakim the father of Azor,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-23159\" class=\"text Matt-1-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>Azor the father of Zadok,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Matt-1-14\">Zadok the father of Akim,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Matt-1-14\">Akim the father of Elihud,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-23160\" class=\"text Matt-1-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>Elihud the father of Eleazar,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Matt-1-15\">Eleazar the father of Matthan,\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Matt-1-15\">Matthan the father of Jacob,\u00a0<\/span><span id=\"en-NIV-23161\" class=\"text Matt-1-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"top-05\"><span id=\"en-NIV-23162\" class=\"text Matt-1-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>Thus there were fourteen generations in all from Abraham to David, fourteen from David to the exile to Babylon, and fourteen from the exile to the Messiah.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Matt-1-18\"><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-23164\" class=\"text Matt-1-19\"><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet\u00a0did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce\u00a0her quietly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-23165\" class=\"text Matt-1-20\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>But after he had considered this, an angel\u00a0of the Lord appeared to him in a dream\u00a0and said, \u201cJoseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-23166\" class=\"text Matt-1-21\"><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,\u00a0because he will save his people from their sins.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-23167\" class=\"text Matt-1-22\"><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>All this took place to fulfill\u00a0what the Lord had said through the prophet:<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-23168\" class=\"text Matt-1-23\"><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cThe virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel\u201d\u00a0(which means \u201cGod with us\u201d).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-23169\" class=\"text Matt-1-24\"><sup class=\"versenum\">24\u00a0<\/sup>When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel\u00a0of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-23170\" class=\"text Matt-1-25\"><sup class=\"versenum\">25\u00a0<\/sup>But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son.
