{"id":1527,"date":"2023-10-01T09:30:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-01T09:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.mgc.ca\/YM\/?p=1527"},"modified":"2023-09-28T14:30:28","modified_gmt":"2023-09-28T14:30:28","slug":"sermon20231001","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mgc.ca\/YM\/sermon20231001\/","title":{"rendered":"Conquering the Unwilling Heart (Pt 1)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"sermonNotes2023\">\n<p>2023 Church Theme: Advancing God\u2019s Kingdom in the New Normalcy<br \/>\nScripture: Jonah 1-2 (ESV)<\/p>\n<p>Speaker: Pastor Aaron Garcia<\/p>\n<div class=\"audio-container\"><audio controls=\"controls\"><source src=\"https:\/\/www.mgc.ca\/mp3\/English\/2023_1001_E.mp3\" type=\"audio\/mpeg\" \/><\/audio><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Jonah 1 (ESV)<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Jonah-1-1\"><span id=\"en-NIV-22534\" class=\"text Jonah-1-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">1 <\/sup><\/span>The word of the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>\u00a0came to Jonah\u00a0son of Amittai:<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-22534\" class=\"text Jonah-1-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cGo to the great city of Nineveh\u00a0and preach against it, because its wickedness has come up before me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-22535\" class=\"text Jonah-1-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>But Jonah ran\u00a0away from the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>\u00a0and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa,\u00a0where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-22536\" class=\"text Jonah-1-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>Then the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>\u00a0sent a great wind on the sea, and such a violent storm arose that the ship threatened to break up.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-22537\" class=\"text Jonah-1-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Jonah-1-5\">But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-22538\" class=\"text Jonah-1-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>The captain went to him and said, \u201cHow can you sleep? Get up and call\u00a0on your god! Maybe he will take notice of us so that we will not perish.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-22539\" class=\"text Jonah-1-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>Then the sailors said to each other, \u201cCome, let us cast lots to find out who is responsible for this calamity.\u201d\u00a0They cast lots and the lot fell on Jonah.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-22540\" class=\"text Jonah-1-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>So they asked him, \u201cTell us, who is responsible for making all this trouble for us? What kind of work do you do? Where do you come from? What is your country? From what people are you?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-22541\" class=\"text Jonah-1-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>He answered, \u201cI am a Hebrew and I worship the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>,\u00a0the God of heaven,\u00a0who made the sea\u00a0and the dry land.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-22542\" class=\"text Jonah-1-10\"><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>This terrified them and they asked, \u201cWhat have you done?\u201d (They knew he was running away from the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>, because he had already told them so.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-22543\" class=\"text Jonah-1-11\"><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>The sea was getting rougher and rougher. So they asked him, \u201cWhat should we do to you to make the sea calm down for us?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-22544\" class=\"text Jonah-1-12\"><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cPick me up and throw me into the sea,\u201d he replied, \u201cand it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"en-NIV-22545\" class=\"text Jonah-1-13\"><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>Instead, the men did their best to row back to land. But they could not, for the sea grew even wilder than before.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-22546\" class=\"text Jonah-1-14\"><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>Then they cried out to the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>, \u201cPlease,\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>, do not let us die for taking this man\u2019s life. Do not hold us accountable for killing an innocent man,\u00a0for you,\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>, have done as you pleased.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-22547\" class=\"text Jonah-1-15\"><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>Then they took Jonah and threw him overboard, and the raging sea grew calm.<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-NIV-22548\" class=\"text Jonah-1-16\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>At this the men greatly feared\u00a0the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>, and they offered a sacrifice to the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>\u00a0and made vows\u00a0to him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"text Jonah-1-17\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>Now the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>\u00a0provided\u00a0a huge fish to swallow Jonah,\u00a0and Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Jonah 2 (ESV)<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"text Jonah-2-1\"><sup class=\"versenum mid-paragraph\">1 <\/sup><\/span><span class=\"text Jonah-2-1\">Then Jonah prayed to the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>\u00a0his God from the belly of the fish,<\/span>\u00a0<span id=\"en-ESV-22551\" class=\"text Jonah-2-2\"><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>saying,<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"poetry top-1\">\n<p class=\"line\"><span class=\"text Jonah-2-2\">\u201cI called out to the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>, out of my distress, <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Jonah-2-2\">and he answered me; <\/span><\/span><span class=\"text Jonah-2-2\">out of the belly of Sheol I cried, <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Jonah-2-2\">and you heard my voice.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-ESV-22552\" class=\"text Jonah-2-3\"><sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>For you cast me into the deep, <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Jonah-2-3\">into the heart of the seas, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Jonah-2-3\">and the flood surrounded me; <\/span><\/span><span class=\"text Jonah-2-3\">all your waves and your billows <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Jonah-2-3\">passed over me.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-ESV-22553\" class=\"text Jonah-2-4\"><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>Then I said, \u2018I am driven away <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Jonah-2-4\">from your sight; <\/span><\/span><span class=\"text Jonah-2-4\">yet I shall again look <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Jonah-2-4\">upon your holy temple.\u2019<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-ESV-22554\" class=\"text Jonah-2-5\"><sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>The waters closed in over me to take my life; <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Jonah-2-5\">the deep surrounded me; <\/span><\/span><span class=\"text Jonah-2-5\">weeds were wrapped about my head<\/span><br \/>\n<span class=\"indent-1\"><span id=\"en-ESV-22555\" class=\"text Jonah-2-6\"><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup> at the roots of the mountains.\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><span class=\"text Jonah-2-6\">I went down to the land <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Jonah-2-6\">whose bars closed upon me forever; <\/span><\/span><span class=\"text Jonah-2-6\">yet you brought up my life from the pit, <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Jonah-2-6\">O\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>\u00a0my God.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-ESV-22556\" class=\"text Jonah-2-7\"><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>When my life was fainting away, <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Jonah-2-7\">I remembered the\u00a0<span class=\"small-caps\">Lord<\/span>, <\/span><\/span><span class=\"text Jonah-2-7\">and my prayer came to you, <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"indent-1-breaks\">\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"text Jonah-2-7\">into your holy temple.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-ESV-22557\" class=\"text Jonah-2-8\"><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>Those who pay regard to vain idols <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Jonah-2-8\">forsake their hope of steadfast love.<\/span><\/span><br \/>\n<span id=\"en-ESV-22558\" class=\"text Jonah-2-9\"><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>But I with the voice of thanksgiving <\/span><span class=\"indent-1\"><span class=\"text Jonah-2-9\">will sacrifice to you;
